Darking attended the Nottingham College of Art where he studied portraiture under the renowned artist, Arthur Spooner. He painted in oils, watercolours and pastels and his versatility was recognised in that he won the Halbrook Award twice, for portrait and landscape. He was a lifetime member of the Nottingham Art Society and became its President in 1985.
During World War 2 he was a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers and worked on many defence installations. Towards the end of the war he set up an art school in Hamburg for soldiers awaiting demobilisation. He became a war artist of some note and following acclaim on the Antiques Road Show his wartime watercolours were purchased by the National Army Museum in London and are on permanent display.
