Draughtsman and painter, who qualified as a dental surgeon in 1959, but 10 years later reduced his surgery hours to concentrate on painting. He took part in numerous mixed exhibitions, including Ashbarn Gallery, Petersfield; Aberyswyth University; Cleveland Bridge Gallery, Bath; Newlyn Orion Gallery, Newlyn; and Gordon Hepworth Gallery, Newton St Cyres. When “The Group of Twelve” was formed in 1992, Dyson was elected president. Solo exhibitions included Rainy Day Gallery, Penzance, 1992. In 1996 the book “36 Drawings by Julian Dyson” was published. Although he worked in many parts of the country Dyson was born in Cornwall and returned there (St Mawes at the time) in the early 1980s, the landscape being a key element in his work. Towards the end of the last century Dyson’s work moved to what he considered “Drawing-Paintings”: emphasizing the quality of line which is so central to these images. People and animals came to dominate his works which were drawn quickly to maintain the vibrant quality and life.
