---------------------------------------------------
Born in Newcastle in 1914, Sylvia studied at Armstrong College, Durham University (1932-36) and then at Johannesburg College of Art (1949-52), where she obtained her Masters degree. She also studied at the Montparnasse, Paris for a short period in 1939.
Sylvia travelled to Burma in 1940 and subsequently to India. Living among local people gave her the opportunity to paint them in their own environment, in all walks of life. She returned to England for a brief period after the War, before setting off for South Africa in December 1947, where she continued to paint and to teach art, one of her passions. In 1963 Sylvia returned to England and made a permanent home and studio, whilst continuing to travel and, of course, to paint.
She was a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors Society and a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers.
